Not a referral service — Texas barratry compliance

Citation: Tex. Penal Code § 38.12

Texas criminalizes the solicitation of legal employment by an attorney, or a person acting on behalf of an attorney, from a person known to need legal services who has not requested the attorney's services. Operating a referral service that solicits clients on behalf of paying attorneys could constitute barratry. Texas Legal Guide operates strictly as an information-and-discovery platform; we do not solicit clients on behalf of attorneys.

Our operational position: All matching is initiated by the user. We never reach out to a user offering specific attorneys unprompted. Attorney 'claim profile' is solely attorney-initiated.

Texas attorney advertising rules

Citation: Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct 7.01-7.05

Texas regulates attorney advertising, solicitation, and communication. Texas Legal Guide does not advertise on behalf of attorneys; we publish a directory of bar-association-verified attorneys based on public records.

Our operational position: Attorney profiles state facts derived from public State Bar of Texas records. Any attorney-supplied 'claimed profile' content goes through a review queue before publication.

Unauthorized practice of law

Public Information Act

Citation: Tex. Gov't Code § 552.001 et seq.

The Texas Public Information Act governs access to public records held by Texas governmental bodies, including the State Bar of Texas. Attorney roster data used on this site is obtained via lawful PIA requests; email addresses are not disclosed per Tex. Gov't Code §§ 552.137 and 552.1176.

Discipline transparency

We publish disciplinary status sourced from public State Bar of Texas records on every attorney profile. We display this transparently because clients deserve full information. Disciplinary history alone does not mean an attorney is unqualified — many attorneys with past discipline are competent practitioners — but it is information clients have a right to know when making a hiring decision.

Board-certification disclosure

Board certifications shown on attorney profiles are issued by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization (TBLS), an independent body separate from the State Bar of Texas. TBLS certification reflects an attorney's experience and examination in a specialty area; it does not constitute a guarantee of outcome or quality of representation.

Out-of-state attorneys

Approximately 28% of currently-active Texas-licensed attorneys are physically located outside Texas. These attorneys are licensed to practice Texas law and may serve clients statewide via remote engagement, but they do not have a Texas office address.
